Taken

Taken, directed by Peirre Morel, is probably one of the best examples of what happens when an actor is cast in a role, that is unusually for him/her. In taken the normally mentor-like Liam Neeson is given the role of action hero. Though, hero might not be quite the right word to describe what Bryan (Neeson's Character) becomes.

The story, while not spectacular, is common action movie fare. Daughter/son/spouse of ex-CIA/FBI/Polic/Marine/Mercenary is kidnapped and ex-CIA/FBI/Polic/Marine/Mercenary must rescue them in a daring manner. But this movie is elvated from this standard to something more entertaining, more interest, and more brutal than any Arnold or Bruce has given us. But for this movie, for the plot, the pure brutality of this movie is perfect. A vengeful father searching for his daughter, within that realm of possibility the amount of cruelty that can be inflected on someone with no remorse is staggering. 

I would like to make a note at this time about the sheer badassitude of Liam Neeson in this movie. To quote my favorite radio program I was doing spinning kicks in the movie theater when Neeson was fighting. What kept running through my head everytime he shot someone once, then moved on was "OMGWTFWALLHAXAIMBOTBBQ" It was fuckin' awesome.

The buddy I went to see this with brought up an interesting point after the movie, sitting at Denny's drinking soapy tasting coffee. He said, in effect "This is what James Bond should have been." An angry motherfucker kicking ass a taking names.

Overall I would very entertained by this flick. Mike Bracken of The Horror Geek said that this was one of the best action films in the last 5 years. It was like a Bourne movie...except you know, good. The only thing that keeps this movie back from a 10 is the first 20 minutes.

 Moral of the story: Never see U2
